R4000 / R5000 Pro Series Frequently Asked Questions

Specification & Dimensions

What sizes are Penn Elcom Pro Series server racks available in?

The range covers 18U-47U configurations. Each size is available in 600mm x 600mm, 600mm x 800mm, 800mm x 800mm, 600mm x 1,000mm, and 800mm x 1,000mm footprints, giving you options for both compact installations and deeper server environments where cable management space is a priority.

What is the weight capacity of a Pro Series server rack?

Maximum load capacity varies by model, rack size and how equipment is loaded into the rack. The specification for each enclosure is listed on the individual product page. If you need to confirm the capacity for a specific configuration, the Penn Elcom team can advise.

What depth server rack do I need?

The 600mm deep enclosures are suitable for network switches, patch panels, and shorter servers, with a maximum usable internal depth of 500mm. The 800mm and 1,000mm deep enclosures accommodate full-depth servers and storage equipment and provide more rear-of-rack space for cabling. If you are unsure, check the maximum depth of the deepest piece of equipment you plan to rack, then allow additional clearance for power and data cabling at the rear.

Are the rails adjustable?

Yes. The rack rails are adjustable, with a mounting depth range of 150mm up to 900mm, depending on the model you choose. This allows equipment of varying depths to be positioned correctly within the enclosure and gives flexibility when planning cable routing behind rack-mounted devices.

What is a rack unit (U) and how do I calculate what I need?

A rack unit (U) is a standard unit of measurement for rack-mounted equipment, equal to 44.45mm in height. To calculate the rack size you need, add up the U height of every piece of equipment you plan to install, then add headroom for future expansion and any blanking panels, cable management, or PDUs. Penn Elcom's Rack Unit Calculator tool is available on the website if you want to work through this quickly.

What is the difference between M6 and 10/32 rails?

M6 rails use metric M6 threaded holes and are the standard in most European rack installations. 10/32 rails use a coarser imperial thread and are common in North American equipment. Penn Elcom offers both configurations across the Pro Series range.

Doors, Panels & Finish

Should I choose a polycarbonate door or a vented door?

Polycarbonate doors provide a clear view of installed equipment while keeping it fully enclosed, which suits environments where dust and physical access are concerns. Vented steel doors improve passive airflow, making them a better choice when heat dissipation is a priority, particularly in densely populated racks or warmer server rooms. If you are running active cooling within the enclosure, either door type can work well alongside a rack fan or PDU.

Are the doors glass or polycarbonate?

The doors on Pro Series server enclosures are polycarbonate, not glass. Polycarbonate provides a clear view of installed equipment while being significantly more impact-resistant than glass, which makes it better suited to server room and data centre environments. The front door is lockable, features magnetic indents to hold it securely when closed, and can be rotated and removed for ease of installation.

Can the side panels be removed?

Yes. Side panels are removable to allow easier access during installation and maintenance. Optional side door locks are also available if physical security of the side panels is required. Or you can opt for the Pro Series Open Tower Rack for a fully open frame rack.

What rear access options are available?

Pro Series enclosures are available with the R4006-SBD range of split back door from 18U to 47U. The door divides into two independently opening panels for easier access in tight installations where a full-swing door would be obstructed. A bottom 3U cable access panel with routing organiser and slam-latch top panel are included as standard. Compatible with R1268/1UK-PBS and R1268/2UK-PBS brush strip panels for clean cable entry.

Are replacement doors available for Pro Series enclosures?

Yes. Replacement polycarbonate doors and split back doors are available separately for both the R4000 and R5000 series enclosures, across all rack heights. This makes it straightforward to switch door type or replace a door without changing the entire enclosure.

Installation & Assembly

Are Pro Series server racks pre-assembled?

Yes. Pro Series server enclosures are supplied pre-assembled, so no on-site assembly is required beyond installing optional castors, positioning and making connections.

Do Pro Series server racks come with castors?

Yes. Pro Series server enclosures are supplied pre-assembled with four W0950Z castor/feet included. The range is also compatible with adjustable feet (R8295), light-duty castor sets (R8480), and heavy-duty castor sets (R8480/HD), as well as a range of alternative castor options for larger systems.

Can multiple Pro Series server rack enclosures be joined together?

Yes. Pro Series enclosures are gangable. Adjacent enclosures can be linked using the R4066-GANG cable chase accessory, which is compatible across all Pro Series footprints and sized by rack height. This creates a unified multi-bay installation with integrated cable management between units.

Do Pro Series server racks have earth bonding points?

Yes. Each enclosure has four earth points at the top and four at the base. Doors and side panels also have optional earth points, supporting proper earth bonding across the installation.

How does external cabling enter the enclosure?

Cable entry is available from both the top and the base of the enclosure. The top panel features six fan knockouts which, when removed, also serve as cable entry points. The base includes an infill panel with knockouts for cable entry from below. The integrated cable management system then routes and organises cabling within the rack.

Cooling & Accessories

What are the cooling options for Pro Series server racks?

Pro Series enclosures feature six fan knockouts on the top panel for ventilation. These are compatible with Penn Elcom fan tray accessories in three-fan (R4000-FT3), four-fan (R4000-FT4), and six-fan (R4000-FT6) configurations, allowing active cooling to be added as required. Vented front doors are also available as an alternative to polycarbonate if passive airflow is preferred.

Can I add cooling, power distribution, or cable management to a Pro Series rack?

Yes. Penn Elcom supplies a full range of compatible rack accessories including cooling systems and fans, power distribution units (PDUs), rack lights, and cable management solutions. These can be specified alongside your enclosure or added later as your installation grows. Pro Series enclosures also feature an integrated cable management system as standard.

Choosing the right rack

What are Penn Elcom Pro Series server racks?

Penn Elcom's Pro Series server racks are premium 19-inch stand-alone rack enclosures designed for installation in server rooms, data centres, broadcast facilities, and comms rooms. They combine robust steel construction with a range of configuration options to suit different equipment and environment requirements.

What is the difference between the R4000 and R5000 series enclosures?

Both series share the same external dimensions, door options, and feature set, but differ in their rail threading. R4000 series enclosures are fitted with M6 rails, while R5000 series enclosures use 10/32 rails. Choosing the right series for your equipment avoids the need for adaptor hardware.

How do Pro Series server racks differ from Penn Elcom's flat pack rack range?

Pro Series server enclosures arrive fully assembled and are built for permanent, high-density server room installations, with deeper cabinet options (up to 1,000mm), ganging capability, and the full range of M6 and 10/32 rail configurations. Penn Elcom's flat pack racks are supplied as ready-to-assemble enclosures, making them easier to transport and more cost-effective to ship, which suits smaller installations, AV setups, and home or office builds. The flat pack range is designed for lighter-duty, more accessible applications.

How do Pro Series server racks differ from Penn Elcom's shock-mount rack range?

Pro Series enclosures are designed for long-term, fixed installations. Penn Elcom's shock-mount rack range is engineered for applications where the rack and its contents need protection from vibration and impact during transport, such as touring, broadcast, or live event use. If your installation will be stationary, Pro Series is the appropriate choice.

Does the Pro Series name carry across to other rack formats?

Yes. The Pro Series designation applies across Penn Elcom's premium racking range, which includes the enclosed server rack enclosures as well as Pro Series open tower racks and Pro Series wall mount racks. The open tower format suits environments where maximum airflow and easy front access are priorities, while the wall mount option is designed for space-saving installations where floor space is limited. All three share the same specification and quality standards under the Pro Series name.

Customisation

Can Pro Series racks be customised?

Yes. Penn Elcom can accommodate customisation requests upon enquiry, including custom sizes, door types, and colour finishes not available as standard online. Contact the Penn Elcom team directly to discuss your requirements.

What colour options are available?

Pro Series server enclosures are black as standard. Custom sizes, door types, and colours are available upon request. Contact the Penn Elcom team to discuss your requirements.
