Parcels are placed through a swing-open hatch at the top of the box into a loading bay. When the hatch is closed, the cantilevered floor drops, lowering items into the locked storage compartment below. Once inside, parcels cannot be retrieved through the entry hatch, only through the keyed access door. This means couriers can make a secure, contactless delivery whether you are in or not.
The Penn Parcel Box range has been designed to work with multiple couriers and postal services, with no codes, apps or scanning needed — drivers simply lift the top hatch, place the parcel inside, and close the door. Because the parcel box doesn't require integration with the courier's system, every driver can use it the same way.
The Penn Parcel Box is built to stop the two most common ways parcels go missing from a doorstep: opportunist theft of items left in the open, and fishing, where someone reaches back through a delivery opening to hook a parcel out. Because the loading mechanism is one-way with no open route from the entry hatch to the storage compartment, there's no way to access a parcel once it has dropped down.
Parcel theft is a significant and growing problem. The Penn Elcom's Global Parcel Theft Report (2022) found that 33% of people surveyed have had a package stolen or lost in their lifetime. Globally, more than a billion packages were stolen in a 12-month period, with parcel theft increasing rapidly in the UK, Australia, Canada, United States and UAE.
Beyond theft, missed deliveries are a daily frustration, with redelivery attempts, trips to collection depots, and parcels left with neighbours or on doorsteps that all carry their own risks. A parcel box removes the problem entirely: deliveries are accepted and secured 24/7, with no need to be at home.
You can read the full report here.
Yes. All Penn Elcom parcel boxes can accept standard letters and mail alongside parcels and packages, so you do not need a separate letter box.
Yes. The Penn Parcel Box (PBX1, PBX2 and PBXL) accepts multiple deliveries from any courier throughout the day until the lower storage compartment is physically full. The locked storage compartment below the loading bay is designed to hold multiple parcels across all models.
The loading mechanism resets automatically after each drop, so a morning delivery, a lunchtime delivery, and an afternoon delivery from three different carriers can all use the same parcel box. You need to empty the box when it reaches capacity to ensure future deliveries can take place.
The Penn Parcel Box protects your deliveries from theft and weather, but responsibility for the condition and accuracy of a delivery sits with the retailer and courier. If a parcel arrives damaged or is incorrect, the process for resolving this is the same as with any home delivery: contact the retailer or courier directly, quoting your order number and any photographic evidence of the damage.
When placing an order online, use the delivery instructions field to let the courier know. Something like "Please place parcels in the parcel box and take a scan to confirm delivery" works well. It also helps to note where the box is located if it is not immediately visible from the front of the property. The optional weather resistant delivery placard (PBXWPB) can also be attached to the box itself to make it clear to drivers.
We offer three sizes: Standard (PBX1), Large (PBX2), and Extra Large (PBXL).
The Standard model accepts parcels up to 42 x 24 x 36cm / 16.53 x 14.17 x 9.44”; the Large accepts parcels up to 60 x 50 x 34cm / 23.62 x 19.69 x 13.39”; and the Extra Large is the largest on the market, suited to high-volume or commercial use. All models are available in black, and the Standard and Large are also available in green. See the individual product pages for full dimensions and capacity.
For most households the Penn Parcel Box PBX1 (95 L capacity, max parcel 420 × 360 × 240 mm / 16.53 × 14.17 × 9.44") handles the typical mix of clothing, shoes, books and household orders that arrive day to day.
Step up to the PBX2 (248 L, max parcel 600 × 500 × 340 mm / 23.62 × 19.69 × 13.39") if you order more frequently, get larger items like small appliances or homeware, or share the box across a household where multiple parcels may arrive on the same day.
The PBXL (450 L, max parcel 1080 × 500 × 340 mm / 42.52 × 19.69 × 13.39") is the high-volume option more typically suited to commercial premises, offices, or properties expecting multiple deliveries every day.
If you're unsure, we recommend sizing up — it reduces the chance of a courier finding the parcel box full and reverting to standard delivery processes.
Yes. As well as private homes, our parcel boxes are well suited to apartment buildings, office entrances, commercial premises, and communal properties. For multi-occupancy or higher-volume installations, the Extra Large model (PBXL) is worth considering. If you have a specific commercial requirement, contact us to discuss options.
The Penn Parcel Box range is designed for indoor or outdoor installation, and best suited near where you normally receive deliveries — porches, paths, front gardens, gateposts, driveways, courtyards, side returns, garages and covered entrances are all common locations.
Two things to consider when choosing a spot: (1) visibility — the courier should be able to see the box clearly and quickly, since visibility is the biggest factor in whether they'll use it on the first visit; (2) clearance — there should be enough space for the entry hatch to open fully without obstruction.
The installation guide (supplied with the Penn Parcel Box and downloadable from our website on the product listings) covers installation in detail. You can also view our installation video here.
The PBX1 and PBX2 models come with both a front and rear access door, giving you flexibility over placement. Front access is ideal if the box is positioned against a wall or fence. Rear access allows the box to be built into a boundary, wall, or fence so that deliveries go in from the front and are collected from inside the property. Wall bracket and floor mounting kits are included with the PBX1 and PBX2 (not applicable for the PBXL).
It does not need to be, but it is strongly recommended. Bolting the box to a concrete surface using the included floor mounting kit makes it resistant to removal and provides the most secure installation. Alternatively, the box can be secured using interior weights. Bolts are included for floor mounting. More in-depth instructions are provided with the Penn Parcel Box and can also be found under ‘Technical Information’ on the product page. If you're not sure about your surface, contact us before installing.
The Penn Parcel Box is designed to be relocatable. Bolt-down installations can be undone by removing the four sleeve anchors from the base; the pre-drilled fixing holes mean the box can be reinstalled in a new location without specialist equipment.
The PBXL also includes preinstalled castors with adjuster feet, designed to make repositioning easier when moving between locations.
